Excellent point made via a letter to the editor to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:
It's clear that drivers don't need more lanes
Paul Beitzel, a Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce vice president, and Beth Nichols, executive director of Milwaukee Downtown, both cited the lack of traffic congestion and minimal impact on downtown businesses caused by the Marquette Interchange project in the Nov. 26 Journal Sentinel ("Big interchange ramps ready to open").
This should come as no surprise. Drivers are remarkably resourceful both in finding alternative routes and in altering the time of day in which they drive. If a temporary reduction in freeway lanes caused by the Marquette Interchange project does not produce congestion, that tells me the existing number of lanes is adequate.
In view of this, one wonders why additional freeway lanes are needed.

The truth is: If you build it, they will come (and congest). If you don't, they will find another way.
