I'll never enter another Menards store as long as I live.
Bad enough that owner John Menard has long disdained any attempt to rein in his stores' environmental impact, now we learn that the Menards chain continued selling firewood imported from Illinois well long after the ash borer beetle threat was made clear.
Yes - - we're talking about the insect responsible for the loss of more than 20 million ash trees in the Midwest so far. The same pest that is so feared for its destructive ability that, last June, officials said they will order all ash trees to be cut down on private or public lands within a half-mile of an infestation. Don't bring firewood back from Illinois or Michigan, we were told, because the beetle is already there.
Menards kept their Illinois-imported firewood on their shelves until the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued an "emergency action notice" to Menards - - -LAST WEEK! And even then they failed to take the wood off of all of their shelves.
I will never, ever spend another dime at a Menards store.
