A highlight of my recent visit to Wausau, Wisconsin last weekend (for a class reunion) was a chance for my family to see the Traveling Wall veteran's memorial.
It's a powerful experience, to say the least, greatly heightened by sharing it with so many people of all ages. A look at the many tributes and trinkets left at the foot of this memorial drives home the loss and sacrifice commemorated here, as well as the fresh losses and sacrifices still being experienced day after day in a war designed by men who secured multiple deferments or cushy National Guard posts when it was their time to serve.
"I had other priorities in the '60s than military service." -- Dick Cheney in The Washington Post, April 5, 1989.
